Nailing Down Job Interviews
A job interview can be one of the most important events in your life. A good job interview can help a person land a high paying job that can provide years of satisfaction. Conversely, a bad job interview can leave you scrambling to pick up a job and out of luck when it comes to employment.
Simply put, when you have a chance to land a position, you need to hit a home run in the job interview. How do you insure that your job interview is a rewarding experience? You have to prepare for the job interview as you would any other huge event in life.
The first step to preparing for a job interview is to create a solid resume. Your resume won’t get you hired, but it will serve as a marketing guide that a potential employer will look over when you interview for a position.
It should be short, clear, and concise. In addition to highlighting your past experience, a resume should also highlight the best things about you. It should be a personal highlight reel of your strengths and how you can help a company.
Once you have created a perfect resume, it is time to get ready for the actual interview. Interviews can be nerve racking, but you can relieve some of that stress by being ready for the event. It is important to dress well for your interview. Depending on what sort of job you are looking to land, you have to dress accordingly.
A suit is standard for men, especially in positions that require the daily wear of more formal attire. If you are looking to land a job in a law firm or with a bank, be sure to wear black shoes. Those are still the only accepted colors for footwear in the industries.
When you are dressed for success, you must head to the interview. Be on time! Punctuality is an absolute key when it comes to making a good impression on the potential employer. When you make them wait, you are wasting their time. In the business world, time is money.
Being prepared for a job interview involves bring along the right things. Included in those things are some essentials for landing a job along with some personal characteristics that must be carried with you through the process. On the more practical side, be sure to bring along your social security card, a birth certificate, driver’s license and other identification pieces.
These will be necessary for your identification and when filling out paperwork. You should also bring along a rested, calm mind. Get plenty of sleep before the interview so that you can speak to the potential employer in an alert manner. This is your one big shot to land a great job. If you aren’t on top of your game, the opportunity might not come again.
When you have a chance to interview for a great job position, it’s your primary directive to sell yourself to the potential employer. If you are going to be marketing yourself, you must come prepared to make a great impression.
Some people like to rehearse with a friend of family member before a big interview and solicit feedback. Others like to rehearse in front of a mirror, anticipating questions and giving well thought out answers. Role playing is sometimes effective in the preparation stage as well.
The more well thought out the answers and anticipated questions, the least like that one will receive a “curveball” by the interviewer and the more relaxed the interviewee will be. Before heading into the interviewers office, take a few deep breathes, get centered and present yourself in a positive manner both verbally and non-verbally.
Sit up straight and be assertive without being aggressive. If you follow these tips, you’ll do fine and your career search will come to a rapid conclusion as your new employer will not be able to anything else but hire you.
